Agnes Scanlon

Oskaloosa. Agnes Scanlon, 94, of rural Oskaloosa, died Sunday, January 2, 2011, at the Mahaska Serenity House in Oskaloosa. She was born April 13, 1916 at Phillips, Wisconsin, the daughter of Frank and Anna Hasso Patik. She grew up in Cedar Rapids, and on July 26, 1952, was married to Joseph A. Scanlon at Cedar Rapids. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to a farm near Oskaloosa, where Agnes was a homemaker. Joe died on October 22, 1992. Agnes was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Oskaloosa, and had been a member of the Altar and Rosary Society of the church. She attended the weekly Coffee Break bible group at First Christian Reformed Church. The essence of her being was prayer and tending her garden. She enjoyed cross word puzzles and loved going to the Iowa State Fair and delighted in the whole ‘fair atmosphere’. Agnes was always up for an adventure!

Her family includes her sons: Mike (& Donna) Scanlon and Pat Scanlon, all of Oskaloosa; a daughter: Anne Marie Mueller of Lincoln City, Oregon; her former son in law: Cameron Mueller of Colorado Springs, Colorado; three grandchildren: Paul (Misty) Scanlon, Matthew Scanlon, and Valerie (Brent) Edel; six great grandchildren; and a sister, Margaret Rourke of Cedar Rapids.

Besides her husband, Agnes was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers: Andrew, Frank A., Dan, Joe, Rev. Anthony Patik, and George Patik; and three sisters: Helen and Mary Patik, and Sister Claire Marie Patik.

Mass of the Christian Burial for Agnes Scanlon will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the St. Mary’s Church in Oskaloosa, with the Reverend Thomas Spiegel officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery, Oskaloosa. A Rosary will be recited Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel, and visitation with the family will follow until 7 p.m. Memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Church or the Hospice Serenity House.
