Aggressive Statesmen Earn First ‘W’ of 2012

The William Penn Men’s Soccer Team scored a 2-0 victory over Ottawa (Kan.) Sunday

Oskaloosa–The William Penn men’s soccer team brought a heightened intensity to the pitch Sunday afternoon and was rewarded for it with a 2-0 victory over Ottawa (Kan.) in non-conference play.

The Statesmen (1-1) evened their mark by doubling up the Braves 14-7 in the shot category. The aggressiveness got the home team in trouble as well, however, as it was whistled for 21 fouls (two yellows), but it was all worth it in the end.

Angelo Kelly (Fr., Ottumwa, Ottumwa HS) scored his first collegiate goal when he sprinted past the defense to catch up to a ball sent forward by brother Jeff Kelly (Sr., Ottumwa, Indian Hills CC). Angelo then slipped a shot past Ottawa goalkeeper Drinnan Sante to give William Penn a 1-0 lead at the 27:40 mark.

A strong defensive effort made the margin stand until the final minutes. Then with 2:43 remaining, Joshua Jacobs (Fr., Luton, England, Potteridge HS) tallied the insurance goal by placing the ball in an open net for his first goal of 2012.

The play was set up when Matheus Riberio (Fr., Vitoria, Brazil, Cent. Edu. Charles Darwin) received a pass in the box, and despite getting taken to the ground by a Brave defender, stuck with the ball and centered a pass into Jacobs, who made a slight move to his right to get beyond Sante for the shot.

Jacobs and Leonardo Teixeira (Jr., Sao Paolo, Brazil, Indian Hills CC) tied for the team lead with three shots each, while Mason Bandy (So., Calgary, Alberta, St. Francis HS) recorded three saves.

Head Coach Greg Jarosik, who collected his first coaching win at William Penn, was pleased with how aggressive his team was against the Braves (0-2).

“We were able to apply more pressure today than on Friday,” Jarosik said. “That allowed us to be more dangerous when we moved the ball forward. This was a good win and hopefully we can take this momentum into future contests.”

Next: William Penn travels to Fayette, Mo. Thursday to face Central Methodist in non-conference action at 5 p.m.
