Gladys Marie (Cover) Geyer, 90, of Albia, passed away Sunday, January 2, 2011, at the Monroe Care Center in Albia. She was born September 16, 1920, in rural Iowa to Harley and Sylvia (Jordan) Cover. She spent her early years near Necedah, WI, where she was an ice skater and pole vaulter, milked eleven cows each morning and night, and picked enough blueberries one summer with her sister Kathryn to buy two ponies. She later returned with her family to Gibson, IA, where Gladys graduated as valedictorian of the class of 1939.
Gladys married W. Kenneth Geyer on May 31, 1941, in Lancaster, MO. They were married for more than 69 years. She lived in What Cheer and Sigourney before moving to Albia with her family in 1957. Alongside her husband, Gladys worked as the Business Manager of the Geyer Funeral Home in Albia and the Turner Funeral Home in Moravia until her retirement at the end of 1983. Gladys taught Sunday school in Sigourney, was a member of the Eastern Star, the Albia Women’s Club, the United Methodist Church, and the United Methodist Church Women, So-and-Sew Club, the Trinity Builders Sunday School Class, and was past president of the Jefferson School PTA.
Gladys was a Christian, lifetime homemaker, expert pie baker and mother extraordinaire who cherished her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her children: Connie (Tom) Adler of Albia, Roxie (Fred) Pirnat of Normal, IL, Cindy (Dick) Kading of Coralville, IA; Grandchildren: Jeff (Lynn) Adler of Lovilia, Jill (Marc) Wynn of Lovilia, Karen (Steve) Zolfaghari of Bloomington, IL, Becky (Sean) White of Aurora, IL, and John Kenneth Kading of Coralville; great-grandchildren: Nicholas Beary, Katie Beary, Makenna Adler, Nathaniel Wynn, Brooke Zolfaghari, Luke Wynn; and one sister Kathryn Streigle of Arlington, TX. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sisters, Helen Grimm and Ada Niswander, brother, Harley Cover, and grandson, John Todd Adler.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 5, 2011, at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Albia with Rev. Neil Montz officiating. Burial will follow in Oak View Cemetery. Visitation will take place on Tuesday, January 4, 2011, from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with the family present at the Sinnott Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Albia. Memorials may be directed to the Trinity United Methodist Church.
