Jack Barnard, 80, of Ankeny, Iowa and previously of Oskaloosa and Cedar, Iowa passed away at the Hospice of Central Iowa Kavanagh House in Des Moines, Iowa on Wednesday, June 21, 2017. Jack Dee Barnard was born on December 31, 1936, the youngest of eight siblings to Wilbur Ora and Ruth Joy (White) (Moore) Barnard.
Jack attended Cedar Consolidated School graduating in 1954. During his high school career, he participated in basketball, baseball, and band.
Jack was blessed with 61 years of marriage to Mary Elaine Osterfoss. They were joined in holy matrimony at the Cedar United Methodist Church.
Jack was a devoted husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He enjoyed attending grandchildren and great-grandchildren sports, music, dance recitals and drama activities.
Jack spent his career as a lifetime farmer in Mahaska and Wapello Counties. He worked 25 years for the ASC office in Oskaloosa, Iowa as well as sold DeKalb and McCubbin seed products. Later in life, he joined Gatton Realty as a co-partner before opening Professional Real Estate in Oskaloosa, Iowa. His integrity won him many friends within the business and farming communities.
Jack was an active member of the Fremont Lions Club. He was elected District Governor of 9X4. He was recognized with many International Lions Club awards such as the District 9X4 Governor Award, the first recipient of the G. E. “BUD” KLISE LEADERSHIP Award, Melvin Jones Foundation (Humanitarian Service Dedication Award), and District 9X4 Cabinet Secretary-Treasurer (Distinguished & Unselfish Service Award).
Jack’s hobbies included golfing with many friends, bowling, camping, boating, fishing, water skiing and supporting Iowa high school and college sports teams which included the Iowa Hawkeyes football, basketball, and baseball.
Jack and Elaine spent many years traveling in all but three USA states and throughout many foreign countries, as well as the winter seasons spent in Naples, Florida.
Jack was dedicated to community activities such as a girls and boys basketball referee, co-leaders of the Cedar UMYF, organizers at the Cedar United Methodist Church concession stand during the Southern Iowa Fair. He served as Lay Leader of the Cedar United Methodist Church and was the Little League coach of the Cedar-Fremont Vikings baseball team.
Jack’s legacy continues through his wife; his son Rick and wife Jana (Shepherd) Barnard of Indianola, Iowa; along with three grandchildren: Christopher (& Jill) Barnard of Morton, Illinois, Brian (& Christine) Barnard of Fenton, Missouri and Jaclyn (& Andrew) Wetzler of Indianola, Iowa; seven great-grandchildren: Logan and Taylor Barnard of Morton, Illinois, Jenna, Aaron and Leah Wetzler of Indianola, Iowa and Lauren and Daniel Barnard of Fenton, Missouri. He is also survived by two sisters: Patricia (Barnard) (Shepphard) DeWitt of Oskaloosa, Iowa and Bonnie (Barnard) Smith of Boise, Idaho; brother, Glen “Joe” Barnard and his wife, Virginia “Gini” Barnard of Lake Suzy, Florida; sisters-in-law: Alice Barnard and Doris Barnard of Oskaloosa, Iowa. There are numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Ruth (Barnard) Lane; three brothers: Jay Barnard, Charles “Rex” Barnard, and Bill Barnard; two sisters-in-law: Thelma Barnard and Lucille Barnard; four brothers-in-law: Gerald Lane, John Shepphard, Kenneth DeWitt, and Warren Smith; and a nephew, Rodney Barnard.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Monday, June 26, 2017, at 1 p.m. at the Cedar United Methodist Church in Cedar, Iowa with Pastors Voels and Bud Lane officiating.
Burial will be in Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa.
Visitation will begin at 11 a.m., Sunday, June 25, 2017, at Garland-VanArkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel. The family will be present from 3-5 p.m. to greet families and friends.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude following the burial service at the Cedar United Methodist Church.
Jack wishes to dedicate memorial funds to the Cedar United Methodist Church, Fremont Lions Club or Hospice of Central Iowa Kavanagh House in Des Moines, Iowa.
