Statesmen Clinch Outright Title in 96-84 Win Over Graceland

Lamoni–Torren Jones (Sr., Chandler, Ariz., Sociology) was nearly perfect Saturday as the William Penn men’s basketball team defeated Graceland 96-84 in Heart of America Athletic Conference action.

#2 WPU (25-3, 21-3 Heart) tied its season high for consecutive wins with seven (third time this year) and earned the outright league title and #1 seed for the Heart Tournament. The crown is the 10th in program history and the sixth outright championship. William Penn’s 25 wins also tie for the fourth most in school history.

The navy and gold were red-hot, outshooting the Yellowjackets (18-10, 15-9 Heart) 58.3%-46.8%, including a 57.1% mark from the perimeter. The visitors also recorded a 42-30 rebounding edge.

William Penn scored the afternoon’s first six points and was never in trouble as it finished the season sweep of GU. The home team got to within five at 12-7, but the Statesmen went on a 13-2 run and the margin was never smaller than 12 points again.

Jones guided the victors with an outstanding double-double of 34 points and 18 rebounds. The senior missed just once in 15 field-goal tries (2-for-2 3-PT) and was 4-for-5 at the line.

Jarvis Haywood (Sr., Charlotte, N.C., Business Management) also hit the double-digit plateau with 21 points and four steals off the bench.

Brandon Trotter (Jr., Louisville, Ky., Kinesiology) led the rest of the scoring crew with seven points, while Jeremy Postell (Sr., Atlanta, Ga., Sociology) and Lionel Ellison (Sr., New Orleans, La., Kinesiology) (also with five steals) concluded the win with six points each.

Elijah Williams (Jr., Chicago, Ill., Physical Education) and Charles Knowles (Sr., Chicago, Ill., Physical Education) added five points apiece, and Kevin Smith (Sr., Baltimore, Md., Physical Education) assisted on four baskets.

Next Up: William Penn travels to Atchison, Kan. next Wednesday to face #14 Benedictine in Heart action at 7:30 p.m.
