Hot shooting Central College men’s basketball team routs Luther

Central College

PELLA — Some days the shots fall and Saturday was one of those days for the Central College men’s basketball team dismantling Luther College 105-70 Saturday.

In the win, Central broke the school single game record for most 3-pointers made with 24, squashing the previous record of 20.

The Dutch were led offensively by junior forward Kyle Smith (Ionia, New Hampton HS) with 17 points including 5-of-9 from beyond the arc, senior forward Colby Taylor (Creston) had 12 points and six rebounds, senior forward Austin Glawe (Aurelia, Sioux Central HS) had 12 points including 4-of-6 from 3, senior guard Pete Walker (Red Oak) had 10 points and six rebounds and junior forward Malik Wildermuth (Normal, Ill., University HS) had 10 points, four rebounds and three assists off the bench.

“Really proud of the way the guys played today,” said coach Craig Douma. “We did a great job of making shots today. The guys brought a ton of energy and it didn’t matter who was in the game they attacked.”

Central had 15 players score in the contest and a record-high 13 made at least one 3-pointer. The Dutch controlled the glass 42-22 and outshot the Norse 59.7 percent from the field to 37.3.

The Iowa Conference tournament awaits Central when the no. 5-seeded Dutch travel to Simpson College Tuesday for the opening round matchup that begins at 8 p.m. Simpson won the first two matchups against Central this season, 64-63 at Simpson January 18 and 82-71 at Kuyper Gym February 11.

“I think there are a few things we can do better than we did the first couple times we played Simpson,” said Douma. “We felt like we left a lot of points on the board the last time we played. We’re going to be ready to go against Simpson and look forward to our fans making the short drive to Indianola Tuesday night.”
