Oskaloosa, Iowa – Iowa Governor Terry Branstad encouraged Iowans to grab their bibles and take time to read the bible at each county courthouse across Iowa.

In Mahaska County, that reading will start on Thursday morning and is planned to continue day and night until Sunday afternoon.

Jan McVey has been helping to schedule participants in the bible reading marathon. She spoke with Oskaloosa News about the project and the reception it has been receiving.

McVey said the group will read from Genesis to Revelations, and they have approximately 70 percent of the time slots filled, but more volunteers are needed.

Each volunteer slot is 15 minutes in length and McVey says that some volunteer to do more than one slot.

“Lots of smiles”, says McVey of those passing by the reading.

When it comes to the investment in time and energy into the project, McVey says “God will honor those who speak out for him. It’s what we’re doing. We’re putting his word into the air and the Holy Spirit will be empowered to bless wherever it needs to go”.

VcMey says they hope to “reach people and bring them to the Lord” during their bible reading marathon.

“There are those who fight Christianity. They say the Bible’s dead. We’re putting the word out there that he’s alive. Very much so”.
