Volunteers have reached a decision about where dollars from United Way of Mahaska County’s fall campaign will go. Thirteen local nonprofits will receive $194,000 in 2016 through the annual community investment process.

“The Community Investment Team had to make some very hard decisions,” said Amy Meyer, executive director of United Way of Mahaska County. “We saw grant requests go up by 10%, while campaign giving went down by about $50,000. But fortunately, we were able to use some of our reserves to soften the impact on our partner agencies and give out roughly the same amount of money as last year.”

The Community Investment Team is a group of volunteers from various industries and backgrounds. Fourteen community members take part in the two-day process where they hear from local nonprofits, read their grant applications and then, as a group, make a recommendation about how those community dollars are distributed.

United Way of Mahaska County is very happy to have two new partner agencies this year.

Mahaska County Habitat for Humanity will receive $10,000 to help with building their next partner family home and Mahaska County Agency on Aging will get $9,000 to help support Mahaska County Agency on Aging, which provides meals and activities for local seniors.

“It’s exciting to be partnering with Habitat this year,” said Meyer. “United Way strives to have a big impact on the lives of those living in poverty, and what has a bigger impact than helping a family build a long-term, sustainable home?”

This year, the United Way of Mahaska County will support the following agencies:

* Crisis Intervention Services
* The Ecumenical Cupboard
* Food Bank of Southern Iowa
* Imagine the Possibilities
* Iowa Legal Aid
* Love in the Name of Christ
* Mahaska County 4-H
* Mahaska County Agency on Aging
* Mahaska County Habitat for Humanity
* Mahaska County Homelessness Coalition
* Mahaska County YMCA
* Mahaska Health Partnership Hospice Auxiliary
* New Hope Community Center
