Vera Roberta Hicklin, 96, of Oskaloosa, died Monday, October 19, 2015, at Oskaloosa Care Center in Oskaloosa. Vera was born December 27, 1918, near Barnes City, Iowa, the daughter of Bonnie E. and Ruby A. Speas Gott.

Vera attended Center School in Pleasant Grove through 8th grade. She went on to graduate from Barnes City High School with the class of 1936. She then attended one year of college at Capital City Commercial College in Des Moines.

Following college Vera worked for Equitable Life Insurance in Des Moines for two years. On September 17, 1939, she was united in marriage to Forrest N. “Frosty” Hicklin at Albany, Missouri. Frosty died on November 1, 1979.

In 1953, she started working as a clerk for the United States Postal Department, in 1970, she became the Postmaster of the Rose Hill Post Office. Vera retired from the postal service in 1981.

Vera was a member of the Barnes City Christian Church and later the Rose Hill Community Church. She was also a 50+ year member of the Rose Hill Pythian Sisters, where she served as secretary for many years. Vera also belonged to the Phi Chi Club of Rose Hill and Chapter 0687 of the NARFE.

Vera enjoyed traveling. She made several trips to Europe, a trip to the Holy Land with her sisters, and fishing trips to Canada with Mike; these were some of her favorites. She also enjoyed playing cards and pool with family, friends, and neighbors. Vera was very talented at crocheting and baking. She will be remembered for her fantastic pies.

Her family includes her two sons and their wives: William Arlo (& Kathy Hicklin) of Solon, and Forrest “Michael” (& Carolyn) Hicklin of Sun City West, Arizona; a granddaughter and her husband, Rebecca (& Matt) Boyd; her sister, Charlene Goettsch of Des Moines; a sister in law, Charlotte Gott of Leesburg, Virginia; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a brother, Garth Gott; and a sister, Bonita Weber.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 22, 2015, at 11 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend Del Bittner officiating.
Burial will be in the Springfield Cemetery south of What Cheer, Iowa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation with the family will be held Thursday morning from 9 a.m. until service time at 11 in the Bates Funeral Chapel.
Memorials may be made to the Rose Hill Community Church.
