Statesmen End Time in MCC Placing Third in Cup Standings

Oskaloosa–An all-around solid showing by the Statesmen athletics department helped the navy and gold to its top finish in seven years as the 2014-2015 Midwest Collegiate Conference’s Commissioner’s Cup Standings were released.

All 17 of the league’s sponsored sports have determined their champions and points have been awarded for finishes in the final regular season standings or finishes in the league’s championship event. Bonus points were also awarded to conference tournament winners.

The MCC sponsors men’s soccer, women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s cross country, women’s cross country, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s indoor track & field, women’s indoor track & field, men’s bowling, women’s bowling, baseball, softball, men’s golf, women’s golf, men’s outdoor track & field, and women’s outdoor track & field.

Highlighted by a title in women’s golf, William Penn earned 625 points to place third out of seven teams. Runner-up finishes by men’s bowling and men’s indoor track and field and bronze finishes from men’s cross country, men’s basketball, men’s outdoor track and field, and softball also led WPU to its best finish since 2007-2008 (also third). Four other squads placed fourth in their respective sports.

Grand View won the Cup with 900 points, including sport crowns in men’s soccer, women’s basketball, women’s bowling, baseball, softball, and men’s golf.

St. Ambrose had the highest title tally with eight to finish second with 835 points. The Fighting Bees managed trophies in men’s cross country, women’s cross country, women’s basketball, men’s bowling, men’s indoor track and field, women’s indoor track and field, men’s outdoor track and field, and women’s outdoor track and field.

Mount Mercy was right behind William Penn to take fourth with 620 points (men’s basketball title).

Clarke did not have a regular season crown, but still finished fifth with 525 points, while Viterbo earned the volleyball title en route to sixth place (455 points). AIB, which only sponsors 11 sports, nearly overtook Viterbo with sport wins in women’s soccer and baseball for 450 points.
