Oskaloosa, Iowa – The Mahaska County Board of Supervisors took initial steps on Monday to help residents of Country Life, otherwise known as the County Home, make their transitions to new residences easier.

Country Life will be closing its doors at the end of June, and the residents that remain there will be moving to other accommodations. Those residents who have been living at Country Life may have an opportunity to utilize the beds, blankets, dressers and other small items in order to help them transition to different living arrangements.

This could be made possible with a legislative decision by the Supervisors, if they deem the property as being used for the public good. The move carries the support of the Christian Opportunity Center in their efforts to help some of the residents.

Mahaska County Deputy Don DeKock visited with the Supervisors to begin the process of updating the Courthouse Security Committee on courthouse security. DeKock says that updated security measures are being looked at because of directives handed down by Supreme Court Chief Justice Mark Cady. The issue has come to the forefront for the justice system after a September shooting at the Jackson County Courthouse in Maquoketa.

The Board also approved, on a 2 to 1 vote, to utilize the services of the Marion County Attorney’s Office. This is to help during the transition period after current County Attorney Amy Zenor departs at the end of the month. Only Van Weelden objected to the arrangement.
