Oskaloosa, Iowa – With warmer weather and sunshine, more people are outside enjoying recreation. Young and old alike enjoy riding their bicycles.

On Saturday, the Oskaloosa Police Department, Oskaloosa Fire Department, Kelli Steil Farm Bureau, Oskaloosa Blue Zones, Oskaloosa Bicycle Coalition and Hy-Vee all helped sponsor the first bicycle rodeo that Oskaloosa has hosted in some time.

Oskaloosa Police Lieutenant Craig Alexander said that the target audience was youth in kindergarten to 8th grade.

Bobzilla’s Bicycle Werks was on hand to look over and inspect the riders bicycles. A donation from the Mahaska County Salvation Army helped to buy and provide lights and helmets for those who needed them. The Oskaloosa Police Department licensed the bicycles for free, a normal $1 fee.

Alexander explained that the course was put together to test and train a rider to understand how to brake and maneuver properly.

Miranda Cummings with the Oskaloosa Blue Zones project said that, “It was a really great opportunity for us to partner with all the organizations that are helping to make bike safety awareness.”

Cummings added it was important to help the kids, “feel comfortable on two wheels”.

Alexander said there are plans to potentially hold another such event later on this year.
