Oskaloosa, Iowa – The clouds and rain held off long enough on Saturday for the 2nd Annual Chalk the Walk.

This fundraiser for Operation Backpack is also a part of the student run radio show ‘The Kitchen’, on 88.7 KIGC, which is an effort to bring awareness to the educational opportunities available at William Penn University. FACE of Mahaska County and Mahaska County United Way helped out with event as well.

William Penn Senior and KIGC General Manager Kurt Sodak, along with Professor Matt Wagner, were a couple of the creators of the event. “We were trying to do something that would get families involved,” said Sodak.

Interested individuals signed up online, or stopped by the Oskaloosa Elementary School, to rent a space for $10. That is when the creativity came to life. The torch and crown for the Statue of Liberty were drawn, then individuals could lay down and someone would snap a picture of them being Lady Liberty.

If you were feeling your inner Jedi, you could check out Darth Vader and R2D2, who also made their chalk appearance. A little Calvin & Hobbs, and many other artistic creations, came to life on those 10 foot by 12 foot rented cement canvases.

In the end, approximately 20 sidewalk slabs were rented. Other donations were also taken in to help with Operation Backpack.
