Cedar Rapids–The Statesmen baseball team almost came away with two more late-inning wins, splitting a Midwest Collegiate Conference doubleheader with Mount Mercy Sunday.

William Penn (17-16, 7-6 MCC) dropped the day’s first game 3-2, but then pulled out the nightcap 3-1.

The Mustangs broke a scoreless tie in the opener with two runs in the fourth. Robert Phiakeo (Jr., San Diego, Calif., Business Management) then cut the deficit in half in the top of the sixth with a double to score Connor Sutton (Jr., Gilroy, Calif., Sociology).

Mount Mercy (14-17, 5-8 MCC) got that run back in the bottom of the sixth and it ended up being the difference-maker. One of MMU’s five errors nearly knotted up the contest in the seventh as Matt Emerson (Sr., Saugus, Calif., Business Management) touched the final plate, but J.P. Rios (Jr., San Diego, Calif., Business Management) was thrown out at home to end the game. WPU was outhit 7-4.

Josh Ruiz (Sr., Chula Vista, Calif., General Mathematics) lost for the first time in his Statesmen career (11-0 prior to Sunday). The senior permitted three earned runs, while striking out six without a walk.

The navy and gold got on the board first in game two as pinchrunner Chris Bartmann (Sr., Washington, Iowa, Secondary Education) scored via a fourth-inning error (one of three for Mount Mercy).

The Mustangs tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth, but two runs in the sixth sealed the deal for William Penn. Emerson singled in Sutton and Phiakeo scored an insurance run on a sacrifice fly by Kenny Hall (Sr., Morgan Hill., Calif., Exercise Science).

Patrick Roxbury (Sr., Canyon, Calif., Sociology) and Sho Serrano (Sr., Lancaster, Calif., Physical Education) each finished with two hits as the visitors overcame being outhit 8-7.

Jacob Logan (Sr., Galesburg, Ill., Psychology) evened his record at 1-1 by scattering eight hits in a complete game. He struck out two (no walks) in the win.

Next Up: William Penn travels to Des Moines Wednesday to face Grand View in an MCC doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. The first game will be played on Grand View’s campus, while the nightcap will be contested at Principal Park, the home of the Triple-A Iowa Cubs (5 p.m. start).
