Fort Madison–The William Penn men’s golf team dominated en route to its second crown of the spring as it won the Iowa Wesleyan Classic Monday.

The Statesmen bested the 11-team field with a 294 at the par-72 Sheaffer Memorial Golf Course. Waldorf was a distant second at 309.

Frederik Lundsgaard (Fr., Jebjerg, Denmark, History/Government) paced the winning squad with a three-under 69 to take the medalist award.

Fellow freshman Gareth Sargent (Knysna, South Africa, Psychology) was the only under player under par at one-under 71 to finish second in the 63-player event.

Tyler Lallier (Sr., Algona, Iowa, Business Management) was sixth at 75 and Spencer Skipper (Jr., Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Business Management) tied for 15th at 79. WPU could have possibly scored even lower but its fifth player Brandon Dizon (So., San Leandro, Calif., Sociology) withdrew from competition during his round.

The navy and gold’s second and third teams were also on the course Monday, tying each other for fourth place at 316. Clay Tucker (So., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Business Management) was the low scorer for the ‘B’ team at 76, while Cade Hartman (Fr., Las Vegas, Nev., Business Management) was low for the ‘C’ group, also at 76; they tied for seventh.

Ben Roberts (Jr., Albia, Iowa, Industrial Technology) finished in the top 10 as well, tying for 10th at 78, while Jeremy White (So., Baytown, Texas, Mechanical Engineering) matched Skipper at 79.

Justin Bothma (Fr., Boksburg, South Africa, Business Management) tied for 18th at 80, while the trio of Peter Frederiksen (Fr., Hornslet, Denmark, Mechanical Engineering), Charlie Hayes (So., Whitesboro, Texas, History/Government), and Kyle Hashimoto (So., Acampo, Calif., Undecided) all tied for 21st at 81. Ethan Powers (Jr., Tipton, Iowa, Business Management) (T-39th, 86) and Jeremy Swink (Sr., Burlington, Iowa, Physical Education) (T-49th, 89) played for team scores as well.

Three individuals also swung the sticks Monday with Byron Lindeque (Sr., Boksburg, South Africa, General Accounting) and his 83 tying for 32nd place. Rory Schafer (Fr., Solwezi, Zambia, Mechanical Engineering) tied for 36th (85) and Terence Schafer (Jr., Solwezi, Zambia, Industrial Technology) tied for 44th (87).

Next Up: William Penn is off until next Wednesday and Thursday when it travels to Lawrence, Kan. to compete in the Baker Invitational. Play will be contested at Alvamar Golf Course.
