The Mahaska County Board of Supervisors discuss the next step in getting the roof repaired on the Mahaska County Courthouse.

Oskaloosa, Iowa – The Mahaska County Board of Supervisors held its final regular session of 2014 on Monday, December 15, 2014. This was also Mahaska County Supervisor Greg Gordy’s last official meeting after serving multiple terms in office. Gordy chose not to run for re-election this past year.

Bids for the Mahaska County Courthouse roof repair were opened on Monday, with bids of $234,100 by Renaissance Roofing. Koopman Roofing submitted a bid of $228,000. Additional work options were also included by each bidder for the Supervisors to consider, which could ultimately add to the cost of the repair.

Project manager Darrell Smith from Terracon, who was hired by the Supervisors, believes that both bidders were over the estimated cost. He suggested the possibility of opening up further options to be bid on, such as the optional use of the foam adhesive or hurricane clips on the roof, as a way to lower the cost of the repair.

Ultimately, the Supervisors agreed to set aside the bids and tabled the item until the next meeting.

The roof of the Mahaska County Courthouse was damaged in a windstorm on April 27th of 2014.

Mahaska County Attorney Amy Zenor requested a wage increase for Amber Rivera after she successfully completed her probationary period in the county attorneys office. “She’s done tremendous work,” said Zenor. The new wage is currently set at $47,500.

The new Mahaska County Engineer David Shanahan had his 6 month review. Shanahan had the option of holding the review in closed session, but instead chose for it to be open to the public.

“I think you’re doing a great job,” said Supervisor Chairman Mike Vander Molen. “I feel pretty glad to have you on.”

Both Greg Gordy and Mark Doland complimented Shanahan. They appreciated his openness and reports as to what the current financial situation of the department is, as well as the current status of projects.

“I feel that the board has to be kept in the loop of what we do,” said Shanahan. “I work for the three of you and for the county.”

The list of military tax credits was also approved for the fiscal year of 2015-16.

The next scheduled meeting is January 2nd, when newly elected Supervisor Willie VanWeelden will be sworn into office.
