Oskaloosa–After being pushed by the tiny church school in the first half, the Statesmen men’s basketball team used its high-tempo offense to run away from Faith Baptist Bible 112-71 in non-conference play Tuesday.

#18 William Penn (6-2) outshot the Eagles (3-1) 52.4%-40.3%, but only led 40-37 with 4:07 left in the opening stanza. Fortunately, a 13-4 run pushed the edge to 12 at the break, 53-41.

In what will be the first of two matchups this winter (teams will meet again on December 1 in Ankeny), Faith Baptist Bible remained close in the initial moments of the second period. Ahead 60-49 with 15:55 on the clock, the navy and gold tallied seven unanswered and never led by less than 15 again. Another big run of 15-0 a bit later put the contest officially out of reach.

It is the fourth time WPU has reached the century mark this year. The team, which has won six straight since starting 0-2, is currently averaging 96.0 points per outing.

Each side performed well from the perimeter with the Statesmen connecting on 15 three-pointers and the Eagles managing 11 deep shots (eight in the first half).

Oliver Wells (Sr., Cedar Hill, Texas, Business Management) kept his squad afloat prior to intermission with 14 points. One game removed from a near triple-double, the senior again performed at a high level with 21 points, ten rebounds, and seven assists. His second-straight double-double was highlighted by going 7-for-8 from the field (3-for-4 3-PT, 4-for-4 FT). Wells made his first ten shots.

Alec Schwab (Sr., Peru, Ill., Business Management) topped WPU in the scoring column by tying the game high with 24 points, including hitting four trifectas.

Shane Bosek (Jr., Lowry, Minn., Physical Education) was a big reason the home team was able to blow out to its huge advantage, scoring 17 of his 19 points after halftime. The junior actually recorded 15 straight for William Penn.

Antione Howard (Jr., Milwaukee, Wis., Physical Education), with 13 points, Kelly Madison (Sr., Des Moines, Iowa, Physical Education), with 11, and Sam Sykes (Jr., Houston, Texas, Business Management), with ten, also joined the double-digit club. Sykes was a force on the defensive end as well, blocking four FBB shots.

Erik McGee (Sr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Elementary Education) corralled nine rebounds as the Statesmen dominated the glass 55-27. A 20-5 offensive margin resulted in one of the biggest reasons for William Penn’s victory with WPU outscoring the visitors 25-0 in second-chance points.

FBB was forced into 16 turnovers, good for 20 Statesmen points.

Next Up: William Penn travels to Chicago, Ill. this weekend to compete in the Moody Bible Tournament. The team opens up play Friday against #20 Ashford at 5 p.m. Saturday’s game time and opponent will be determined by Friday’s result.
