Oskaloosa, IA—The Pride of Penn marching band recently represented William Penn University on Saturday, October 4, with a performance in Algona, Iowa. The band performed in the evening field show as part of the 66th Annual Algona Band Day Festival. A total of 32 high school bands were in attendance, 15 of which participated in the field show. The Pride of Penn entertained musicians and fans from all over the state of Iowa and the Midwest as the competition scores were tabulated.

Their next scheduled performance will be on Saturday, October 18, where the Pride of Penn will be playing in an exhibition at the Mid-Iowa Marching Championships in Ankeny, Iowa. There will be a total of 17 high school bands in attendance, including Oskaloosa and Pella, all of which will be competing for their final time in the 2014 season. Penn will once again perform at the conclusion of the show, just before awards are handed out. Band director Terry DeJong said of the band’s participation, “This is a very prestigious event, and it is a great honor for the University to have been invited to perform.”

For the remainder of the Statesmen home games, the band will be adding special music to their selections for the Coaches vs. Cancer/Fill the Stadium game on October 25 and the Veteran’s tribute game on November 15. In addition, the Pride of Penn will also be hosting a Visit Day on Saturday, November 8. This is an opportunity for prospective students to meet and play alongside band members during the pre-game performance as well as in the stands during the game. Following their final home-game performance of their halftime show, “The Incredibles”, on November 15, the Pride of Penn will begin preparing for their winter programs: pep band, winter guard, and winter drum line.

William Penn University is one of only two private universities in the state of Iowa with a marching band. The athletic band programs offer unique opportunities for students of any major to support university athletics while expanding their musical skills and interests.
