Oskaloosa, IA – This year’s Mahaska Reads program will draw to a close next week with a presentation on Abraham Lincoln and the Emancipation Proclamation by Dr. Ronald Rietveld. The presentation will take place at Book Vault at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 14.

Dr. Rietveld, Lincoln scholar and professor emeritus of History at University of California-Fullerton, will discuss Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, the “King’s all cure” for permanently settling the problem of enslaving blacks in the country, and how the courts, including the Supreme Court, viewed the issue after the Civil War.

The Mahaska Reads Committee is thrilled to welcome Dr. Rietveld to Book Vault for another fantastic opportunity to learn from a gifted speaker. Discussion time and refreshments will follow Dr. Rietveld’s presentation.

Mahaska Reads is an annual community wide reading project sponsored by the Oskaloosa Public Library, William Penn University’s Wilcox Library, the Oskaloosa High School Library, and Book Vault. This year’s selected title was Solomon Northup’s Twelve Years a Slave.

Other Mahaska Reads events this year included Unconditional Surrender: A Visit with Ulysses S Grant by Pete Grady, a Reading around Twelve Years a Slave book chat, a Community Discussion at Homestead Assisted Living, and a free film screening of 12 Years a Slave at the public library.
