OSKALOOSA, IA — Arrrgh, mateys! Set sail on the high seas of imagination with the Story Pirates! Story Pirates comes to Mahaska Country for a two-day residency with a public performance at the George Daily Auditorium on Tuesday, October 21 at 7 p.m.

Story Pirates celebrates creative writing by students from coast to coast in a loud, hilarious sketch comedy musical performed by professional improvisers and musicians. Story Pirates will work with almost 400 elementary students from Oskaloosa and New Sharon, holding Idea Storm Assemblies in both schools on Monday, October 20. Idea Storm Assemblies are part creative writing class, improv show, and pep rallies that help students identify elements of composition and narrative structure, creative problem solving, and conflict resolution.

“You actually have an opportunity for kids to be directly involved in the Story Pirates process. The kids get to see their stuff put on professionally. They get to call themselves the writers and take ownership over their creativity,” said Andy McGuire, Youth Theatre Director at the George Daily Auditorium. McGuire also acts as the Educational Liaison between the Auditorium and School Districts.

Their evening performance on Tuesday, October 21 is based on stories written by elementary school students. Add in suggestions from kids in the audience and the show could be anything from kung fu ninja babies fighting crime to cats flying and tickle monsters who rule the world! Called “crazy entertaining” by the Daily Show’s Jon Stewart, their performance will keep you doubled over laughing, all the while motivating kids to pick up a pencil and write from their imaginations.

Story Pirates has been committed to providing high quality arts education to children since 2003, visiting over 200 schools across the country each year. Their assemblies and performances have been recognized and sponsored by partners such as Penguin Books, the NBC Nightly News, and The Daily Show on Comedy Central. Over the past ten years, Story Pirates has invited tens of thousands of students to see their own words and ideas come to life on stage.

Perfect for families or those young at heart, tickets to the evening performance of Story Pirates cost $12 for adults and $5 for students. This residency is sponsored by Clow Valve and the Optimist Club and is made possible with support from the Mahaska County Community Foundation.
