October is Lions Clubs International Share the Vision month, and for the fifth year in a row, the Oskaloosa Lions Club is providing free KidSight vision screenings at the annual Kidtoberfest at Penn Central Mall, Saturday, Oct. 11, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Iowa KidSight vision screenings are for children ages 6 months old through 5 years old that are not yet seeing an eye care provider. Screenings are offered free of charge, but a parental consent form is required. Parents may fill out the form on site, or can prefill the consent form and send it with a grandparent or friend. The consent form must be filled out completely and signed by a parent or legal guardian. Parents can pick up a consent form before Saturday at either Fareway or Doty’s in Oskaloosa.

KidSight vision screenings are quick and easy with a digital camera that takes two photos of the child’s eyes in a matter of seconds. At the end of the day, the images are sent to the University of Iowa Ophthalmology Clinic where they are interpreted by a medical team. Parents receive the results of the screening in the mail about a month later. The state of Iowa does allow KidSight vision screenings to be used as a pre-Kindergarten vision check.

Each child screened Saturday will also receive a free children’s book as part of the Oskaloosa Lions Club’s Reading Action Program.

Oskaloosa Lions meet the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the Oskaloosa Public Library’s 3rd floor meeting room. Other vision projects conducted by the Oskaloosa Lions Club are assisting people in need with the purchase of eye glasses, sponsoring Camp Courageous low-vision summer camp, and White Cane Day awareness.
