Doris Mildred Shaw age 99, of Oskaloosa and formerly of Hedrick, passed away March 18, 2014 at Northern Mahaska Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Oskaloosa.
Mildred was born August 18, 1914 in Keokuk County the daughter of Jesse and Alvina Bruns Tygart. She graduated from Sigourney High School in 1932 and subsequently earned her teaching certificate.
Mildred taught country school for three years at Lancaster Township before her marriage to Waldo Shaw on April 25, 1936 in Sigourney, Iowa. Following her marriage she was a homemaker and helped her husband Waldo on the farm. She was a past member of the Order of Eastern Star, a member of the Nazarene Church in Oskaloosa, long time past member of the Hedrick Christian Church where she was very active and where her entire family attended church for generations, she was also Sunday School Superintendant for many years and was a member of various neighborhood clubs.
Mildred’s hobbies included crafts, crocheting, sewing, embroidery, music-especially playing the piano, and reading-mostly Religious and History books. She and her husband enjoyed traveling, wintering in South Texas, and they had traveled to every state except Alaska and Hawaii. Her greatest delight was her family.
She is survived by her son: Lyle (Janice) Shaw of Southbury, Connecticut; son-in-law: Ed Shultz; four grandchildren: Greg (Vicky) Shaw, Christine (John David) Cowart, Robin (Bill) Spooner, and Tad (Beth) Shultz; eight great grandchildren; sisters-in-law: Pearl Tygart and Georgana Hutton.
Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Waldo; a daughter, Linda Shultz; and a brother, James Tygart.
Visitation will begin after 12:00 noon Monday, March 24, at the Fremont Funeral Chapel with the family present from 6:00-8:00 p.m. to greet family and friends.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 25, at 10:00 a.m. at the Fremont Funeral Chapel with Reverend Bill Hornback officiating.
Burial will be in Abel Cemetery near Fremont.
