Schwab’s Tourney Excellence Nets Final POW of Year
Oskaloosa–If there were a Tournament MVP award, Alec Schwab (Jr., Peru, Ill., Business Management) would have won it hands-down as his supreme scoring efforts last week helped him earn Midwest Collegiate Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honors Monday.
Schwab picked up his second award after leading William Penn (22-9) to the MCC Tournament title. The Statesmen have won eight games in a row entering next week’s NAIA Division II National Championships.
The junior averaged 32.0 points per game, beginning with 40 against AIB in Wednesday’s quarterfinals. He then added 25 points in the semis vs. Mount Mercy, before finishing the spectacular week with 31 points in the championship game win over Grand View.
Schwab is only the second player in program history to have multiple 40-point performances in his career, doing so both times in February. He also averaged 7.7 rebounds in addition to 2.3 assists, 0.7 steals, and 0.3 blocks. His 25 points in the semifinals were joined by 13 rebounds for his second double-double of the year.
For the year, Schwab is averaging 16.1 points and 5.0 rebounds as well as posting 41 assists, a team-best 28 steals, and four blocks. He has reached double figures 21 times this year (13 of his last 14 games), highlighted by a 43-point showing against Clarke on February 8.
It is the sixth award for William Penn this year.
