Statesmen Dropped Twice at Augustana Triangular

Rock Island, Ill.–The William Penn volleyball team came up a bit short as it competed at the Augustana Triangular Tuesday.

The Statesmen (8-12) opened the day with a 3-0 loss to the host Vikings (19-25, 19-25, 22-25) and then fell 3-0 to Carroll (Wis.) (26-28, 25-27, 16-25).

William Penn, which was outhit by Augustana .187-.035, was paced by Jeanette Cunningham (Sr., Mt. Orab, Ohio, Elementary Education) and her eight kills. Kylie Giger (So., Elkhart, Ind., Exercise Science) added seven kills in the sweep. The sophomore also managed three blocks (one solo, two assists).

Leyra Jusino (So., Bayamon, P.R., General Biology) assisted on 13 winners, while Danielle Breeher (So., St. Louis, Mo., Undecided) posted 18 digs.

Kristal Campos (Jr., Lancaster, Calif., Sociology) reached double figures against Carroll with 12 kills, while Giger tallied seven and Alanna Connors (Sr., Libertyville, Ill., Biology) had six. WPU lost the hitting battle .168-.058.

Jusino finished with 16 assists and Sarah Stepp (So., Oakville, Mo., Undecided) served up three aces. Breeher (24 digs) and Giger (one solo block, one block assist) guided the defensive effort.

Next: William Penn travels to Grinnell Friday to compete in the Grinnell Tournament. The Statesmen face Buena Vista at 7 p.m. and host Grinnell at 9 p.m.
