Statesmen Take Fifth at Baker Invite
Lenexa, Kan.–The William Penn men’s golf team is still trying to figure out its lineup, but an improved second day may have helped sort things out a bit as the Statesmen competed at the Baker Invitational Sunday and Monday.
William Penn placed fifth out of six teams at the par-72 Falcon Ridge Golf Course with a two-day tally of 644 (323-321). Culver-Stockton (Mo.) carded 314 on both days (628 total) to rally past host Baker (309-325–634) by six strokes.
Cody Brandau of Iowa Central CC claimed tournament medalist honors with a 152 (70-82).
Byron Lindeque (Jr., Boksburg, South Africa, Business Management) broke into the top ten to lead the navy and gold, finishing in a tie for ninth out of 38 players with a 158 (82-76).
Clay Tucker (Fr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Business Management) was next in a tie for 11th at 160 (78-82), while Charlie Hayes (Fr., Whitesboro, Texas, History/Government) tied for 13th with a score of 161 (82-79).
Chris Dupont (Fr., Miami, Fla., Physical Education), with a score of 165 (81-84) also placed inside the top 20 in a tie for 19th. Zach McGriff (Fr., Grinnell, Iowa, Biology) rounded out the varsity scoring at 180 (90-90) to place 34th.
Jeremy Swink (Jr., Burlington, Iowa, Education) played as an individual and tied Dupont for 19th at 165 (85-80).
“This was a tough course that we certainly struggled with at times,” Head Coach Steve Tucker said. “We had an improved second day which tightened things up in the team standings. Hopefully, that was a sign of things to come.”
“We came out poorly on the second day, but rebounded nicely so it was good to see the fight in our guys,” Tucker added. “We could have given up, but instead they chose to step up. Our young team definitely grew up a little today.”
Next: William Penn is off this week, returning to action by traveling to Panora for the AIB Fall Invitational on September 27-28 at Lake Panorama Golf Course.
