The Rural History Buffs of Marion County invite you to participate in their second annual bus tour of historic places in rural Marion County. On Wed. Sept. 18 participants will board the bus at 9 am at the New Covenant Church, 1512 West Madison St. Knoxville. This year’s tour begins with stops on the north side of the Des Moines River below the Red Rock Dam. Some of Marion County’s earliest pioneers established homes and businesses there shortly after the area was open for settlement in May of 1843.

Some of the places visited will be Horn’s ferry and Durham’s ferry, Amsterdam and Porterville schools, and the Nossaman cabin. Along the drive we will see the location of Prairie Lake which gives its name to the township. Sandy Agan Connie Blommers, Helen Boertje, Abie Davis, Will Prather, Arlene Roorda and Charlotte Shivvers will be among those presenting information at the various stops.

After lunch at Monarchs in Pella, the tour will continue along the scenic perimeter road on the north side of Lake Red Rock. At one of the stops there will be a presentation about the the Red Rock line and the afternoon will end with desert at the farm home of Peggy Terpstra before returning to Knoxville.

The cost will be $60 per person and includes coach travel, lunch and desert. To reserve your spot , please call Iowa State Savings Bank Premier Club Travel Coordinator, Lillie Brandon at (641) 820-0177.
