Joe passed away Wednesday afternoon at his home in Oskaloosa after a brief battle with cancer. He was 68 years, 5 months and 12 days of age.

Joseph William McCurdy, son of Eugene Royd and Lucille Nell Synhorst McCurdy, was born, September 1, 1944, in Oskaloosa. He was a 1962 graduate of Oskaloosa High School and was also a graduate of William Penn College. For a brief time, while in college, he served in the National Guard. Joe later studied computer science at Indian Hills Community College and was then employed for several years at Mahaska State Bank in their computer department. Joe married Charlotte Ann Shumate, June 14, 1970, at the Methodist church in Dunlap, Iowa. In 1977, Joe went to work at Pella Corp. as a system’s analyst; he remained there for 30 years, retiring in 2007. He was a member of the Elks Club and Pheasants Forever, over a 20 year member of the Bass Club of Oskaloosa and a past member of the Shriners. If a day was over 50 degrees, Joe enjoyed golfing with friends at Elmhurst Country Club, now Oskaloosa Golf. He also enjoyed fishing, pheasant and deer hunting, coffee with friends and trips to Florida with family and friends for golf and camaraderie.

Joe’s family includes his wife of 42 years, Charlotte of Oskaloosa; a daughter, Sarah McCurdy of North Liberty, Iowa; a son, Michael (Lynette) McCurdy of Thornton, CO; grandsons: Brandon and Christian at home in Thornton; a sister, Elinor (Norm Gysbers) Arendt of Columbia, MO; two sisters-in-law: Marcia (Steve) Hooten of West Des Moines, IA and Debra (Ben) Benefield of Roland, IA and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by a son, Mark; a brother, Rodney; a nephew, Brian McCurdy; and a niece, Lori Arendt.

Visitation: will begin at 11 a.m., Friday morning, February 15, 2013 at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel. The family will be present from 5 – 7 p.m. to greet visitors.
Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m., Saturday morning, February 16, 2013 at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel with Reverend Liz Colton officiating.
Interment: Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa, Iowa.
