Duane “Whitey” A. Grant, 78, of Sigourney and formerly of Fremont died Monday, February 4, 2013 at the Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa.
Duane was born Monday, March 12, 1934 in Newton, Iowa the son of Leslie P. and Ethel B. Nevins Grant. He graduated from Sully High School with the class of 1952. Following high school he attended a tech school in Minneapolis to become a railroad telegrapher. On June 28, 1954, Duane was united in marriage to Mary Schroeder at Bear Creek, Wisconsin. He then went to work for Chicago- Northwestern Railroad in Wisconsin until 1955 when he and Mary moved to Des Moines where he worked for Rock Island Railroad. In 1967, while still working for Rock Island, they moved to Marengo, Iowa and bought a bar named the Grant Ranch and he and Mary operated it for several years. In 1977, they moved to Keswick and bought a bar, also named Grant Ranch. They owned and operated both restaurants until 1980 when they moved to Harper and ran the Harper House Restaurant. In 1981, they started working for Motel 6 in several different states and did that until 1996. From 1996 until 2000 they traveled around the country in their 5th wheel camper and worked where ever they were needed, mostly in restaurants. In 2000 they retired and moved to Fremont and lived there until 2009 when they moved to Sigourney. Duane enjoyed playing cards, dominos, drinking beer, and flower gardening. He was a member of the Fremont United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife: Mary Grant of Sigourney; two sons: Scott (& Sally) Grant of Webster and Steve (& Dorita) Grant of Ollie; a daughter: Sherry Fisher of Sigourney; 5 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; and a sister: Bonnie (& Jim) Bryant of Fremont.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A celebration of life service will be held at the Copper Lantern in Sigourney from 4 – 6 p.m. on Wednesday, February 6, 2013.
As was his wish his body has been cremated and no visitation is planned.
