Eugene Sheely, 92, of Pella died Thursday, January 31, 2013 at Pella Regional Hospital in Pella.

Eugene was born Tuesday, March 23, 1920 in Mahaska County, the son of Morris (Mike) and Zella Gatton Sheely. He attended Lacey High School. Following school Eugene went to work for farmers in the Cedar and Wright areas until going to work at Morrell’s in Ottumwa. Eugene later joined the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII. Following his discharge he returned to Morrell’s in Ottumwa. In August of 1947, Eugene was united in marriage to Hazel Boyer in Kansas City, Kansas and she died in 1991. He later worked with the D.O.T. in Ottumwa until moving to Marshalltown where he drove semi for about a year. He later moved to Huntington Beach, California in the late 1950’s and drove semi there hauling railroad cars and large tubing until his retirement in 1982. Following retirement he and Hazel moved to Newton, Iowa. Following Hazel’s death, Eugene moved to Pella to be closer to his sister, Violet. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for over 55 years and of the Teamster’s Local #224 in Los Angeles, California. He loved walking, talking to people and telling jokes.

He is survived by two sisters: Violet Valster of Pella and Sandra Hudson of Delta; two brothers: Darwin Sheely of Oskaloosa and Roger (& Donna) Sheely of Carlisle; two sisters-in-law: Marie Sheely of Oskaloosa and Zola Sheely of Ogden, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, 6 brothers: Jerry, Larry, Bernard, Lloyd, Darrell, and Delmer Sheely; and two sisters-in-law: Phyllis Sheely and Shirley.

Visitation will begin Monday after 10 A.M. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be present at the funeral chapel Monday from 10 – 11 A.M. to greet friends and relatives.

Funeral services will be held Monday, February 4, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend Vince Homan officiating.

Burial will be in the Hopewell Cemetery north of Rose Hill, Iowa. Graveside military rites will be given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion and V.F.W.

Memorials may be made to the Eugene Sheely Memorial Fund.
