Mary J. Hols, 85, of Oskaloosa, died Wednesday, January 2, 2013 at Northern Mahaska Nursing and Rehab in Oskaloosa. She was born Friday, February 18, 1927 in Searsboro, Iowa, the daughter of Arie and Georgia Rinehart Vander Linden. She graduated from the Oskaloosa Senior High with the class of 1945. Mary then attended Iowa Lutheran Hospital Nursing School and graduated from there in 1949 with her R.N. degree. On October 18, 1953 she was united in marriage to Lester Wayne Hols at Nashua, Iowa and they later divorced. She worked as the public health nurse in Oskaloosa for several years until moving to Colorado Springs. Mary then worked at hospitals in the Colorado Springs, Washington state, and at Mahaska County Hospital. Lastly Mary worked as the school nurse in Montezuma for 9 years until her retirement in 1992. In 2001 she moved back to Oskaloosa. Mary enjoyed sewing, quilting, drawing, fishing, and attending family gatherings.
Mary is survived by 2 sons: Carl Hols (& friend Stacey Jones) of Tama and Terry D. Hols of League City, Texas; 3 daughters: Christine K. (& Mike) Fiscus of Hendersonville, Tennessee, Marcia J. (& Steve) Roozeboom of Oskaloosa, and Joanna L. (& Brad) Van Baale of Monroe; 8 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; 3 brothers: Donald (& Joyce) Vander Linden of Prescott, Arizona, Kenneth (& Marcia) Vander Linden of Bloomington, Indiana, and “Bill” William (& Ann) Vander Linden of Fairview, Tennessee; 4 sisters: Ethel Mattox of El Cajon, California, Dorothy (& Roy) Moore of Fremont, Iowa, Martha Durham of Littleton, Colorado, and Alice Howard of Lakewood, New Jersey.
She was preceded in death by her parents; 3 brothers: Garrett, Charles, and Eugene Vander Linden; 3 brothers-in-law: Melvin Durham, Keith Mattox, and Bruce Howard; and a sister-in-law: Virginia Vander Linden.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 1 P.M. at Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Minister Mark Doland officiating. Burial will be in West Liberty Cemetery near Montezuma. Visitation will begin Friday after 11 A.M. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be present at the funeral chapel Friday from 5:30 – 7 P.M. to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to Midwest Bible Camp, Imagine the Possibilities, or Iowa Public Television.
