Indians Suffer Third Loss Of The Season

Austin Redlich just moments after intercepting Carlisle’s Josh Hagedorn in the 4th quarter Friday night.

Carlisle, Iowa – It’s been a tough season so far for the Indians, and it’s only three weeks in. Even though Friday ended up as another mark in the loss column, it was apparent the team is ready to break out into the win column soon.

Carlisle put itself on the board first with 6:49 remaining in the first quarter on a Daniel Hupke carry for 43 yards. Jose Fuentes kicked in the PAT and Carlisle was ahead 7-0.

Once again, Carlisle turned to Hupke as he dashed his way in from 49 yards out with 4:04 on the clock in the first quarter. Josh Hagedorn ran in the PAT to put Carlisle up 15-0.

Carlisle’s first quarter was big, and on its third scoring drive of the quarter, Kichanh McMullen carried the ball 32 yards for the TD with just 18 seconds on the clock in the first quarter. Fuentes once again sends it through the uprights and the Wildcats of Carlisle appear to be in complete control leading 22-0 over the Indians.

The Indians finally find the end zone just before halftime on the Jared Pace rush from 3 yards out with 24 seconds remaining in the half. Jared Pace completes the scoring cycle by running in the PAT to put the Indians on the board 22-8 with the Wildcats leading.

The Wildcats once again hand the ball off to Hupke who dashes in from 4 yards out for the TD with 11:04 on the clock in the third period. Fuentes boots it through once again, giving the Wildcats the 29-8 lead.

The Indians confidence continued to grow during the second half, and Nate Van Veldhuizen runs in for the 6 yard TD with 11:31 on the play clock in the 4th quarter. Jonah Renter kicks the PAT, and the Indians now trail the Wildcats 29-15.

In less than a minute, the whole game changed when Austin Redlich intercepts the Carlisle pass by Josh Hagedorn and returns it 36 yards for the TD with 10:56 remaining in the game. The kick by Renter was good, giving Carlisle just a 7 point advantage.

The Indians hold Carlisle to just 4 plays suffering a loss of 2 yards and Carlisle punts.

The Indians take over on their 35, and over the next 7 plays, they march to Carlisle’s 17 yard line and have a 1st and 10.

A carry by Jared Pace nets 2 yards and it’s 2nd and 8 from the 15. Pace once again hammers the ball forward, but only nets a yard, bringing up 3rd and 7.

The pass from Jesse Van Dalen is broken up and the Indians face a 4th and 7.

Van Dalen’s pass is once again broken up and the Indians turn over the ball on downs.

Carlisle wears out the game clock and claims the victory with the final score of 29-22 over the Indians.

Coach Schilb said this past week, they worked on being more physical in practice. “We went live. We went full one’s versus one’s,” Schilb said, taking the regimen up to Thursday.

“We’ve got to get tougher, we’ve got to get more physical. We showed tonight that we could be.”

Schilb said that both offense and defense helped to bring momentum to the team. Schilb said that “with the offense starting to make first downs, and getting a touchdown and our defense with some adjustments from our coaches and our players going out and executing that.”

“Football is a momentum game like most sports are,” Schilb said pointing towards the score and then the defense came out, “and was flying to the ball. Playing like they expected to win.”

“I’m ready to go to practice tomorrow,” said Schilb with some new found confidence.
