Dorothy A. Jackson
Oskaloosa. Dorothy A. Jackson, 87, of Oskaloosa and formerly of rural Rose Hill, died Thursday, August 2, 2012, at the Northern Mahaska Nursing and Rehab. Center in Oskaloosa. She was born October 19, 1924, on the Beach Family Farm east of Oskaloosa, the daughter of James Ralph and Bernice Hinkle Beach. She graduated from the Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1942, and attended William Penn College. Following school she moved to Chicago. On June 22, 1946, she was united in marriage to W. Mack Jackson in Oskaloosa. W. Mack died on April 30, 2011. Following their marriage Dorothy stayed home to care for her children and home. She had a creative spirit that she used in all aspects of her life from making leftovers into gourmet meals to creating a card or jingle to brighten someone’s day. She was a very devoted wife and mother and was always very involved in her children’s activities. Dorothy dedicated a portion of her life to being a caregiver, not just to family and friends, but always looking to help someone meet a need. She was always willing to give of her time and talents. She was a gifted seamstress making many outfits for children and grandchildren as gifts. She spent her life using her imagination to create gifts and tell stories. She enjoyed cooking and baking; homemade bread and cinnamon rolls were always a special treat at the Jackson home. She was a member of the Central United Methodist Church and was active in the United Methodist Women, D.A.R., and a past leader and member of 4-H. Early on Dorothy and Mack were members of the Farm Bureau “young marrieds” group, they were also members of the Mahaska County Historical Society where they enjoyed helping out at the fall festival at the Nelson Pioneer Farm.

Dorothy is survived by her three children and their spouses, Margaret and Herb Strasser of Ames, Tom and Cindy Jackson of Rose Hill, and Mark and JoAnn Jackson of Rose Hill; nine grandchildren, Crissi Messer, Andy Jackson, KCasey Jackson, Hale Strasser, Eric Strasser, Bryan Jackson, Melody Broadway, Kate Hite, and Michael Jackson; 18 great grandchildren; a sister: Virginia Beach of Aurora, Colorado; and a brother, Joseph (& Joan) Beach of Cedar Rapids.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, James William Jackson; and her parents.

Funeral services will be held Monday, August 6, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend Dale Visser officiating. Burial will be in the Wymore Cemetery near Rose Hill. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will begin Sunday after 10 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 1-3 Sunday afternoon to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to United Methodist Women or Hospice Services through Care Initiatives.
