Wounded Vet to wave green flag on Friday, August 3

NEWTON, Iowa – August 1, 2012 – The G.I.V.E. Foundation, which stands for Golf for Injured Veterans Everywhere, has teamed up with Washington and Tama County pork producers to honor several Iowa military veterans during pre-race ceremonies for the ‘Pork Be Inspired 150’ NASCAR K&N Pro Series event on Friday, August 3.

“Through our sponsorship with Iowa Speedway, we are able to help provide some of the G.I.V.E. participants an experience they will never forget,” said Iowa Pork board member Heather Hora. “This program not only helps the Vet out, but also their families. This is just a small way we can give back to those who gave much more.”

The G.I.V.E. Foundation has been in existence for over 5 years now, providing a structured golf program to Vets and their spouses or assistants. The program has had more than 500 students participate in its golf classes, which are taught by Mark Burke. Burke is a certified instructor for the PGA of America and teaches at Willow Creek Golf Course in West Des Moines.

“We are extremely honored to have these Vets at the track, especially during pre-race ceremonies,” said Iowa Speedway president Stan Clement. “From one of the Vets waving the green flag to having them participate in pre-race, we are looking forward to honoring them Friday night.”

The G.I.V.E. Foundation has taught the game of golf to Vets from military conflicts dating all the way back to World War II.

Tickets for the ‘Pork ‘Be Inspired 150’ NASCAR K&N Pro Series event on Friday, August 3, start at $20, and tickets for ‘U.S. Cellular 250 presented by the Enlist ™ Weed Control System’ NASCAR Nationwide Series event on Saturday, August 4, start at $55 and are available online at www.iowaspeedway.com or by calling 1-866-RUSTY-GO (787-8946).
