Public Projects Committee Looks To Define Goals

Oskaloosa City Council Members Joe Caligiuri, Aaron Ver Steegh and Tom Walling help prepare a list of goals to focus on, in regard to garbage collection in the city.

Oskaloosa, Iowa – The Public Projects Committee looks to define it’s goals in updating the sanitation code of Oskaloosa.

Oskaloosa City Manager Michael Schrock Jr. handed out some proposed changes to the city code in relation to sanitation collection in the city. Items like the type of container and if it should be city approved, where the container needs to be placed and the length of time the container would be at the curb were all discussed.

“At this point, we can’t write, I don’t suggest that we write the new code that has the big truck with the arm picking it up at the curb because they don’t all have it.” Was Councilman Tom Walling’s thoughts about the initial draft of proposed code changes.

“So, what I thought we were going to do was modify and update what we have, to cover everything we would like to accomplish to date, with reasonable capability of the haulers we have.”

“I appreciate what you’re saying, and I guess the approach I took was full bore, full changes. Give you the full compliment of changes, and then you could choose and narrow it down from there. If there was something in there you didn’t like, it goes,” was Schrock’s response to Walling’s comment. “But ultimately it would get us to the point where you would set the level of service.”

In earlier comments, Councilman Joe Caligiuri had expressed concern about the mandatory pickup. “I’m gonna agree with Joe on the mandatory part. I’m not to hep on [it],” was Ver Steegh’s comment on the mandatory garbage collection.

“When you get to the point where you have a single hauler system, then I think it becomes mandatory and I don’t know if we’re ready for that yet.” Ver Steegh said, who said that maybe at some point in the future; in a long range plan. “I don’t know if we’re ready for that right now though.”

With that, the group decided to refocus on some goals, and get them prioritized.

Some of the goals to be focused on for the next meeting are in no certain order:

  1. Less Traffic
  2. Higher Recycling Volumes
  3. Uniformity of Containers
  4. Regular Pickup
  5. Enforcement of Problems
