Currier Finds The Desire To Help As A Reason To Run

Denis Currier

Oskaloosa, Iowa – The race for the Mahaska County Supervisor seat has started to heat up, with 5 confirmed candidates having filed papers to fill the seat currently held by Supervisor Willie Van Weelden.

Leighton, Iowa’s Denis Currier is one of two Democrats seeking the office. Sen. Tom Rielly is also seeking the seat for the Democrats. Currier who enjoys drag racing and has been a fixture at the Eddyville Raceway Park for some time, and works in the retail sales of automotive parts for a living, looks to share and use his experiences for those in Mahaska County. Currier also enjoys spending time behind the lens of his camera, either taking pictures of the local racing action or other civic events.

Currier is no stranger to politics, having served as Mayor and City Council Member in the town of Kirkville for a total of 11 years.

“I’ve lived in this area all my life,” Currier said about his choice to run after considerable thought. “It was something I wanted to do and I thought I would give it a try and see what happens.”

“I think this is a great area to live in, and I think we need to help promote it,” Currier says, saying that all the communities should see about working together more in the future for the benefit of the area. “I want to work with everyone in the area to promote Mahaska County.”

Currier, who says he thinks outside of the box, believes that his younger age will help give a different perspective to the office and that that could be beneficial to the county. Currier will be the first to admit there are issues and things he doesn’t know yet, “But I’m willing to sit down and listen to people,” Currier says about listening to those he represents. “Even if we disagree on it, I’m going to listen to you and take what you tell me, and use what I hear from other people, and use that to form what I need to know.”

Currier says he is upfront, “I’m not going to please everybody; you can’t. You’re always going to have two sides to a story, there’s going to be two sides to everything,” saying someone will always be disappointed or mad. “You just got to try to do what’s best for Mahaska County.”

Currier points towards a growing trend in marketing, and utilizing tools beyond websites. He says that things like Facebook and Twitter are good ways to promote the area as well, giving people quicker access to events and need-to-know information.

The June Primary will help set the field for the election in November. Osky News will be sitting down with the other candidates in the near future.
