Mary Jean Cousins was born on February 12, 1950, in Winner, South Dakota. She was raised in Winner and graduated from Winner High School in 1968. Following high school, she moved to Minneapolis and worked. In 1977, she moved to Grinnell and began a career with Grinnell College. She was a member of the Grinnell College staff for 33 years, and was currently an assistant to the Vice President of the college.

Jean had an infectious laugh and she enjoyed reading and watching vintage movies.

She is survived by her son, Michael Cousins of Seattle, Washington.
