Visitation: will begin at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday morning, March 09, 2011 at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel. The family will be at the funeral chapel from 12:30 p.m. to service time on Thursday.
Funeral Service: 1:30 p.m., Thursday afternoon, March 10, 2011 at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel with Rev. Robert Dean of the Central United Methodist Church officiating.
Interment: Madison Township Cemetery north of Oskaloosa.

Melvin passed away Sunday morning at his home in Mulberry Place in Bloomfield at the age of 94 years, 3 months and 24 days.

Melvin John Stigers, son of Leland Clark and Edna Awtry Stigers, was born November 12, 1916 in Lacey, Iowa. He attended Lacey School and following his education worked on the family farm. Melvin married Ila Grace Evans June 30, 1936 in Oskaloosa. He began a career in heavy equipment operation in the coal industry where he primarily operated a dragline. He concluded his career with Hanson Construction of Washington, Iowa, where he worked several years, retiring in 1981. Melvin spent his retirement years on his farm in Van Buren County near Milton, Iowa.

Melvin’s family includes his daughters: Phyllis Jean (Larry) Steele of Montezuma; Ila Joan (Leo) Ornduff of Milton; and Delila Joyce Buckallew of Cincinnati, Iowa; 16 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; many great-great-grandchildren; two brothers: Dale (Shirley) Stigers of Milan, IL and Glen Marilyn Stigers of Rose Hill; and four sisters: Laura (Irvin) Awtry of Davenport; Elsie Caves of Oskaloosa; Naomi Roberts of Eddyville and Lucille (Robert) Thompson of Beacon.

Besides his parents, Leland Clark Stigers and Edna Awtry Loring, Melvin was preceded in death by his wife, Ila Grace Stigers who passed away April 2, 2000; his son, Melvin James Stigers; two brothers: Estel and Roy Stigers; five sisters: Eathol Piper, Marilyn Steel, Fern Roberts, Letha Nielsen and Opal Kitzman; two granddaughters and one great-granddaughter.
