Roderic Ai Camp to speak at Central College March 3

PELLA — Central College welcomes Roderic Ai Camp to campus Thursday, March 3. Camp will give a talk titled “Violence, Security and Crime: Mexico’s War on Drugs” as part of the Mark and Kay De Cook Lecture Series in Leadership in Cox-Snow Recital Hall at 11 a.m. This speaker is funded by the generous support of Mark and Kay De Cook. The event is free and open to the public.

Camp is the Philip McKenna Professor of the Pacific Rim at Claremont McKenna College in Claremont, Calif. He previously taught at Central College from 1970-91. On three occasions, he has received a Fulbright Fellowship and has been awarded two major grants from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation to explore attitudes toward democracy in Mexico and Latin America. He acts frequently as a consultant to national and international media, including the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, NPR and the BBC.

Camp is the author of 25 books on Mexico, six of which have been designated as outstanding academic books. His most recent publications include The Metamorphosis of Leadership in a Democratic Mexico and Politics in Mexico: The Democratic Consolidation. He is the recipient of an Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters from St. Olaf College (Minn.) for his scholarship and teaching on Mexico.
