Paul DeBruin
University Park. Paul Virgil DeBruin, 86, of University Park, died Tuesday, February 15, 2011, at the Mahaska Hospital in Oskaloosa. He was born November 29, 1924, in Marion County, the son of M.C. and Anna Klyn DeBruin. When he was school age his family lived near Beacon and he attended Brush Street School. They later moved to the Leighton area where he helped his father and brother farm. On October 26, 1951, he was united in marriage to Francine Patrick at Oskaloosa. Early on he worked for Jacob Dahm doing road construction. He then drove a coal truck and worked in the coal mines for Bill Memmelar. Lastly, he worked for Mahaska Farm Service in Oskaloosa and retired from there in the late 1980’s. In retirement he enjoyed going back to Farm Service and helping them during the busy season. Later in retirement, he enjoyed driving cars for Carriker Ford and lastly Clemons of Oskaloosa. He was a member of the Central Reformed Church. He also served on the University Park City Council. He enjoyed fishing, motorcycling, tractor rides, and coffee time with his buddies, and had a lifelong interest in all types of airplanes. He delighted in spending time with his family.
His family includes his wife Francine DeBruin of University Park; his daughter and her husband: Jean and Leroy Sytsma of University Park; two grandsons: Mike (& Stacey) Sytsma and Matt Sytsma (& fiancée Holly Anderson); a great grandson: Dawson Sytsma; a brother and his wife: Ralph and Wilma DeBruin of Oskaloosa; a sister and her husband: Doretha and Homer Hasselman of Oskaloosa; a brother in law and his wife: Glenn and Mildred Patrick of Oskaloosa; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother: Larry DeBruin.
Funeral services will be held Friday, February 18, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. in the Central Reformed Church in Oskaloosa with Reverend Don DeGlopper and Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating. Burial will be in the University Park Cemetery, University Park. Open visitation will be at the Bates Funeral Chapel on Thursday after 12 noon. Memorials may be made to the Central Reformed Church.
