Garold Wick

DeKalb, Illinois. Garold Wick, 88, of DeKalb, Illinois, and formerly of rural Oskaloosa and Des Moines, died Monday, February 14, 2011, at the Pine Acres Rehab Living Center in DeKalb. He was born July 10, 1922, at Afton, Iowa, the son of LeRoy and Clara (Breazeale) Wick. He graduated from the Afton High School with the class of 1940. Following high school he entered the United States Navy and proudly served as a Sea-Bee, and served two tours of duty in the South Pacific during World War II. On July 18, 1944, Garold was united in marriage to Mildred Davis at Oskaloosa. Upon his honorable discharge from the Navy, the two of them moved to the Davis family farm south of Oskaloosa. Later they moved to the Wick Century Farm on Highway 63 north of Oskaloosa. Garold and Mildred farmed there until retiring in 1989, and truly loved farming together. In retirement they moved to Des Moines and Garold went to work as a greeter at Sam’s Club. He looked forward to being the store Santa Claus every year at Christmas. Mildred died on December 9. 2001. Garold never lost his love of adventure; he took his first flight in a vintage military bomber when he was 80 years old. He was a member of the Farm Bureau, the Knights of Pythias, and the V.F.W. He enjoyed traveling and dancing.

His family includes his two sons: John Gordon (& Ann) Wick of Naperville, Illinois and Kevon Wick of Seattle, Washington; four grandchildren: Tanya (& Gail) Eaton, Alex (& Megan) Wick, Rachael (& Bill) Crane, and Natelle (& Pete) Halaczkiewicz; three step grandchildren: Peter, Jared, and Sam; nine great grandchildren: Andrew and Nicole Eaton, Drake, Izzy, and Molly Wick, Charlie and Caroline Crane, Mia and Annika Halaczkiewicz; a brother: Lloyd Wick of Port Orchard Washington; two sisters: Dorothy (& Eugene) Jones of Port Orchard, Washington, and Shirley (& Kenneth) Conner of Grinnell; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, Garold was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters: Bernice Harding and Lucille Olson.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, February 19, 2011, at 2 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend Dudley Peterson officiating. As was Garold’s wish, his body has been cremated. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation with the family will be held Saturday from 12 noon until service time at 2 p.m. at the funeral chapel. Memorials may be made to the Trinity Baptist Church, Des Moines, or to the family.
