Trudy was born on July 19, 1944 in Ottumwa, Iowa to Forrest and Alberta Sumner Pencil. She was raised in Ottumwa and she graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1964.
She was married to Ron Vest in 1960 in Ottumwa. The couple resided in Ottumwa, Des Moines and Grinnell respectively, and Trudy was a homemaker and she also worked at Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance for several years. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1987. She was married to Scott Doornink in 2001 and they resided in Oxford.
Trudy dearly loved her family and her pet dog, Thunder. She loved to cook and often looked forward to the holidays, where she would prepare a great meal for everyone to enjoy. Her enjoyments included camping and fishing, especially at Trout Streams in Highlandville, Iowa, going on Sunday afternoon drives in the country, and listening to music.
Trudy is survived by her husband, Scott Doornink of Oxford; her children, Russ (Brandy) Vest of Des Moines, Rob (Shelly) Vest of Grinnell, and Melissa (Brandon Holbrook) Hess of Grinnell; eleven grandchildren, Marc, Ricky, Austin, Alex, Andy, Seton, Macie, Kaitlyn, Brooklynn, and Colby; a great grandchild, Victoria Vest; two step children, David and Derek Doornink; and a step grandchild, Kaiden Doornink. She was preceded in death by her parents.
