Great Chili for a Good Cause

Judges had a tough time deciding on a winner for this years chili cook-off

Before the game between Oskaloosa and Pella Christian heated up, things in the high school practice gym were running hot already.

The annual Oskaloosa Education Foundation chili cook-off was in full swing. A dozen different recipe’s from various competitors were going head to head in, what some may call, a “heated” battle.

Local TV talent A.J. Hodgeman, who was helping to judge the cook-off this year, had this to say about the competition. “This was tough. I mean they’re all so good, but we have to narrow it down to two, so it’s a tough call.”

When it comes to chili, some are alot spicier than others. Hodgeman and his fellow CRI co-workers, that were also helping to judge, had this to say on the different selections. “Nothing blew us away spice wise; nothing with a lot of kick yet. Lots of different kinds of meats in there. I could tell there was some sausage, some pork, and Italian sausage.”

United Way was on hand with their chili that only costs 90 cents per serving. (A photo of the recipe is at the end of this story so you can easily print it out.)

Fareway, and Julie’s Cafe were on hand as well as representatives from the middle school, the school administrative staff, the police department, PEO Chapter NN, not to mention all the tasters that lined up and gave $2.00 for 3 cups, of their choices, of chili.

  • Best Costume this year went, once again, to “The Early Morning Chili”
  • Table Presentation award went to “Tailgate Administrators”
  • 3rd Place went to The Oskaloosa Police Department
  • 2nd Place this year went to The Women Who Cook!!
  • 1st Place, and continuing his strangle hold on the title, went to Kevin Lowry who was representing The Middle School.
