Road crews will work through the night clearing Iowa highways

Iowa Department of Transportation

AMES, Iowa – Feb. 2, 2011; 5 p.m. update – Road crews continue to make progress following the massive winter storm that closed roads yesterday, dumping nearly 2 feet of snow on southeast Iowa, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT).

Overnight tonight, bitter cold winds follow recent heavy snowfalls. A wind chill advisory is set to take effect for the central part of the state beginning at midnight tonight through 10 a.m. Thursday. A north wind at 15 to 25 mph will switch to the west by midnight and then southwest by 6 a.m. Although winds are expected to diminish, overnight lows will drop to between 5 and 10 below zero with wind chills of 15 to 25 below through mid-morning Thursday. While much progress has been made clearing Iowa roads, motorists should still use caution due to the frigid temperatures.
