Winter Storm Update February 2

Travel is not advised on Hwy 63, 163, and 92 but they are now open.

The Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office was able to recover 6 individuals that were stranded last night in the storm. Cedar Township fire had to utilize snowmobiles to rescue 3 other individuals overnight.

Emergency Management would like to remind everyone to use caution during this time if they find themselves needing to travel.

The winter storm that affected Iowa yesterday and overnight is beginning to pull away to the east. Snow will gradually taper off this morning, and winds will slowly diminish through today. However, the winds will still be sufficient to cause widespread travel difficulties this morning in blowing and drifting snow, as well as blizzard conditions at times in eastern and southeastern Iowa. Conditions will improve rapidly by this afternoon. Meanwhile, dangerous wind chills of 20 to 30 below zero will affect northern and western Iowa this morning, and be more widespread across the state tonight and Thursday morning.
