William Penn Still Winless After Matchup Against Park

Oskaloosa–The Statesmen Esports team is still seeking its first victory of the year after falling 2-0 to Columbia in Heart of America Athletic Conference Super Smash Bros Ultimate play Tuesday.

WPU (0-5) was led by the trio of Brady Burge (Fr., Van Horne, Iowa), Brandon Thordarson (Sr., Bloomfield, Iowa), and Jayden Comstock (Fr., Oskaloosa, Iowa).

Game 1

Burge started the opening round as Joker, taking on Park’s No. 1, played by Inkling. Burge took one stock before being eliminated. Thordarson, using Bowser, then claimed another life from Inkling before being knocked out.

Using Donkey Kong as his fighter, Comstock finally finishes off PU’s No. 1 (Comstock lost one life himself), forcing the Pirates’ No. 2 (Lil Mac) into competition.

Unfortunately, Comstock was unable to get to PU’s third fighter before being eliminated, putting WPU into a 1-0 hole.

Game 2

Burge again goes with Joker, meeting up with Samus, the fighter for Park’s first fighter. He takes one stock from Samus before being sent off.

Thordarson also stayed with his fighter from the first game (Bowser), and shared the same fate as Burge by getting a life from Samus before his eventual demise.

Although Samus was down to his last life, Comstock could not get to Park’s second player as he was swept 3-0 to end the night for the Statesmen.

“We are close, but not quite there mechanically yet,” Head Coach Austin Fagen-Scholes said. “Every week, we have performed so much better. We fortunately have the back half of the season to execute.”
