Oskaloosa Girls Wrestlers Earn Two Titles at Knoxville Meet
The Oskaloosa girls wrestling team traveled to Knoxville on Monday night for a meet and turned in a strong showing with multiple medal finishes.
Oskaloosa had four placers on the night, including two champions. Alyssa Sheets placed first at 110 pounds, and Mia Luck placed first at 135 pounds. Kadence Briggs finished second at 190 pounds, and Zayva Claussen placed third at 145 pounds. Whitney Steinlage also competed for the Indians at 120 pounds.
At 110, Sheets went 4-0 with four pins to win the title. She opened with a fall over Aaliyah Swanson of Knoxville in 1:09. Sheets followed with another pin over Maisy Davis of East Union in 3:04, then pinned Lilly Briggs of North Mahaska in 4:41. She closed her night with a fall over Malery McFarland of Cardinal Community in 3:05 to secure first place.
At 135, Luck won the bracket and earned first place with two pins. After receiving a bye in the quarterfinals, Luck pinned Andie Branson of Knoxville in 3:26 in the semifinal. In the championship match, Luck pinned Vivian Joiner of Centerville in 1:52 to claim the title.
At 145, Claussen placed third. She started the night with a pin over Maison Carter of Knoxville in 3:48. Claussen then won by decision over Avery Countryman of Cardinal Community, 5-2, before suffering a loss by fall to Cheyenne Dike of East Union in 0:56. Claussen later dropped a match by fall to Serenity Van Wyk of North Mahaska in 0:27 and finished third overall.
At 190, Briggs finished in second place. She wrestled Keira Jackson of Chariton twice, falling by decision in both matches, 5-1 and 3-1, to take runner-up honors.
At 120, Steinlage went 0-2 on the night. She was pinned by Autumn Sertterh of Cardinal Community in 1:13 and later was pinned by Torri McVeigh of Centerville in 2:22.
The Indians will be back in action tonight at Norwalk and again Thursday night at PCM.
