OSKALOOSA GIRLS SEND THREE TO FINALS AT NEWTON; LUCK WINS TITLE

NEWTON — The Oskaloosa girls wrestling team traveled to Newton on Saturday for the Newton Girls Cardinal Classic and had a strong day with a small group.

Oskaloosa took five wrestlers to the tournament and put three into the finals. Mia Luck finished first at 140 pounds to lead the Indians. Alyssa Sheets took second at 110, and Kadence Briggs finished second at 190.

Luck went 3-0 on the day on her way to the championship. After a bye, she pinned Kentley Wierson of Ballard in the quarterfinals, pinned Estella Bowman of Carlisle in the semifinals, and then pinned Julianna Maldonado of Pella in the title match.

Sheets placed second at 110 and finished 7-3. She opened with a bye, then won by fall over Sadie Buckingham of Central Decatur and Natalie Janssen of Carlisle to reach the finals. In the championship match, she was pinned by Serenity Turner of Knoxville.

Briggs also earned a runner-up finish at 190 with a 5-5 record. She pinned Chelsea Vanderleest of Newton in the quarterfinals and pinned Taytum Smith of Pleasantville in the semifinals before falling in the finals to Mallori Stutsman of Carlisle.

Whitney Steinlage competed at 125 and scored four team points. She won one match by fall in the consolation bracket, pinning Marlee Rivas of Carlisle.

Zayva Claussen wrestled at 145 and finished sixth with an 8-point day. She won her first match by decision over Stella Cochran of Indianola, then added a pin over Amalia Olson of Ballard in the consolation rounds.
