Bob King, 80, of Grinnell died January 26, 2011, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Saturday, January 29, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Deacon Diane Eberhart, Grinnell United Methodist Church, officiating. Organist will be Kathleen Heffner. Pallbearers will be Keith Rose, Steve King, Kevin “Bodie’ King, Anne King, Shane Rose, Erika Rose, Tandy King, Trevor Slycord, Whitney King and Jordan King. Honorary bearers will be Joe Clark, Pete Cline, and Sara, Darci, Paige and Wyatt Rose. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the Smith Funeral Home and with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 Friday evening. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Grinnell Odd Fellows Lodge or JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation).

Bob was born May 1, 1930, on the family farm, near Grinnell, the son of Benjamin Arthur and Frances Broders King. He was raised on the farm and received his education in the Grinnell School District. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served in the Korean Conflict.

On July 28, 1951, he was united in marriage to Vivian Irene Doty, in Hartwick, Iowa. The couple lived in Grinnell and he was employed at the Grinnell Shoe Factory. After his tour of duty in Korea, he returned to Grinnell and co-founded C & K Transfer. He was employed there for 29 years and retired due to health reasons. He was later employed in the security department at Grinnell College for several years.

Bob was a 50 year member of the Grinnell Odd Fellows and a member of the Grinnell American Legion. He enjoyed woodworking and refurnishing furniture, bowling, fishing in Canada, and collecting things. For many years he enjoyed following his family in their various sporting activities.

Survivors include his wife, Vivian King of Grinnell; three children, Katherine (Keith) Rose of Grinnell, Steve (Bonnie Ryan) King of Newton, and Kevin “Bodie” (Anne) King of Cedar Rapids; two sisters, Lois Kasal of Brooklyn and Blanche Manfull of Montour; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Karla King; one brother, Raymond King; and one sister, Lona DeBondt.
