Coe and Grinnell Battle to 2–2 Draw in Season Opener

The Coe College Kohawks and the Grinnell College Pioneers opened their 2025 men’s soccer seasons with a 2–2 draw at Springer Field on Friday afternoon.

First Half Stalemate

The first 45 minutes ended scoreless as both defenses held firm. Grinnell registered two shots to Coe’s one, and the Pioneers held a 58% possession advantage. Corner kicks favored Grinnell, 4–1, while both teams committed four fouls. Coe collected two yellow cards before the break, issued to Ian Kearney in the 31st minute and Dylan Pagel in the 38th.

Second Half Action

The scoring opened in the 47th minute when Grinnell’s Kanata Mizutani, assisted by Demi Oni, gave the hosts a 1–0 lead. Coe responded just over two minutes later when Brandon Kostelny converted from an Ian Kearney assist at 49:31.

Grinnell regained the lead in the 63rd minute on a penalty kick from Oliver Northing, but Coe answered late. With less than two minutes left in regulation, Kevin Williams netted an unassisted equalizer at 88:44, securing the draw.

Team Statistics

Grinnell held a narrow edge in total shots (6–4) and corner kicks (7–4). Coe was flagged for offsides 10 times compared to two for Grinnell. Each team committed 13 fouls, and a total of four yellow cards were issued — three to Coe and one to Grinnell.

In goal, Coe split time between Jr. Holland and William Shaw, each allowing one goal without recording a save. Grinnell rotated between Jayson Kunkel and Jack Alexander; Alexander surrendered both Coe goals but made one save.
