US Department of Labor to assist workers affected by manufacturing layoffs in northeast Iowa

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a $775,351 National Emergency Grant to assist about 115 workers affected by layoffs at five companies in northeast Iowa.

“Only another job can replace a job lost,” said Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis. “Training and employment services provided through today’s grant can help these workers open doors to new careers that offer good wages and opportunities for advancement.”

Awarded to Iowa Workforce Development, this grant will be operated by Hawkeye Community College, Iow@Work and the Upper Explorerland Regional Planning Commission. The grant will provide dislocated workers, many of whom are also certified as eligible for Trade Adjustment Assistance, with access to “wrap-around” and supportive services, which are not available through the TAA program. These services can include developing individual re-employment plans and assistance with transportation and child care. Workers who are not TAA-eligible will have access to a full array of training and employment-related services through this grant.

Layoffs at the five companies covered under this grant — Deco Products Co. LLLP, Decorah, Iowa; Gencor Industries Inc., Marquette, Iowa; Rockwell Automation Inc., Sumner, Iowa; TriMark Corp., New Hampton, Iowa; and Wilbert Inc., Winthrop, Iowa — began in January 2009 and continued through December 2010.
